November, 1998, Newsletter

Dear Historical Society Member,

Welcome to all new members!  The response to our Society's recent town wide mailing has been very successful.  We have added more than 125 new members to the Society's rolls.  During the next several months your board will be contacting you to join in our very interesting programs and to work on many challenging and exciting programs.  We are planning an open house for January to introduce you to the Society, its Board of Directors, properties and programs.  In the meantime we encourage all of you to join us on November 15th for a program on genealogy at the Meetinghouse and our Christmas Fair on December 4, 5, and 6 at the Schoolhouse.

Please take a moment to complete the survey below by checking off areas of interest.  Then mail it back to me or call me with any questions or comments.

A Note from Jean Loveland:

During the summer, I contacted some people in our never-ending search for old photographs.  I am happy to say, some great new pictures have joined our collection.

Lou and Ann Fagan, who have relocated to Block Island, gave us a Congregational Church Booklet and Artists Sketch; a 1973 Sesquicentennial Booklet with photographs, an invitation and graduation program from the Monroe School - 1949, and several news clippings.

Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Smith of Easton gave us some much-appreciated photographs - one of Paul Goulette, former Superintendent of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.  He and his family lived in the Stevenson area.  Also, photographs of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Goulette - he built the Stevenson Store and operated it for many years.  Mrs. Goulette (Ella) lived in their home until about 1940-45.  Another photograph shows Louis Goulette in full dress uniform of the Masonic Lodge.

Other recent additions include a photograph of the former Mothers' Club Kindergarten in Stepney, about 1947.  Newcomers to town may not know that when we had no public kindergarten, the Club operated one for about ten years - a great community effort.

Several pictures (and stories) or the airplanes and motorcycles of the late John Yaros are also new additions.
