Christmas Fair
The 1999 Christmas Fair was a success both in financial terms and in the number of people who donated items and helped during the fair. The profit was approximately $4,000. This money will be used for more renovations at the Beardsley House on Great Ring Road.

The support and attendance of Society members and friends is very much appreciated. Without you, there would be no Christmas Fair.

The Christmas tree raffles were won by Sheila Neville and Karen Cardi.
Thank you to all the Christmas Fair workers: John and Rita Sparano, Pat Rychlik, Millie Ohm, Judy Standerford, Bob and Arlene Gondar, Barbara Waite, Brian Pattyson, Pat and Tony Majewski, Lynn Renaud, Irene Jeruss, Evie Glatt, Madeline Marshall, Anita and George Tuoti, Nancy and Brian Zorena, Judy Martino, Bob and Marge Tranzillo, Phil Jones, Jean Weicker, Joan and George Marr, Debbie Pothier, Louise Wishneski, Jill and John Tovey, Michele Oltra, Joanne Cantiello, Sue Cappucci, and Linda Tomas.

Christmas Open House at the Beardsley House
A special Christmas Open House was held December 10 at the Beardsley House in appreciation of all the volunteer work done on behalf of the Society this year. Millie Ohm cleaned and decorated the house with evergreens and candles and Society members provided food. Special invitees were the Schoolhouse greeters, people who have donated their time to restoring the Beardsley House, and all the people who helped with the fairs and events this year.

Monroe Womens Club Craft Fair
We participated in the Monroe Womens Club Craft Fair at Masuk High School again this year. The fair was held on November 13 and, as they have in the past, the Womens Club donated space for our booth. Bob Tranzillo, Debbie Pothier, and Nancy Zorena were on hand to sell our Society wares and to talk about the work of the Society to interested fairgoers. They sold two prints, several books, and many other items for a total of $245.50. Our thanks to the Monroe Womens Club for their donation of booth space and to Bob, Debbie and Nancy for spending a Saturday setting up and staffing our sales table.

School Attendance Records
Since the last newsletter, I have received more information about the Monroe School Attendance Registers that we acquired from the Masuk Library. Jane Preston, former Head Librarian at Masuk and a member of the Monroe Historical Society was instrumental in seeing that these registers were donated to the Society. During her tenure at Masuk she received permission from Dr. Michaud to have these records turned over to the Society. Thanks to Janes persistence on this subject, we now have them in our possession. We hope to make much of the information contained in them available on our website for genealogical research.

New Recipe Book
We are in the planning stages of a new and revised recipe book. If you have any favorite recipes you would like included, please send them to Rita Sparano, 6 Heritage Road, Monroe. The new book will incorporate those recipes included in our first book as well as add more recipes and a table of contents. We dont have a deadline set for this project, but we hope to have it available for the next Christmas Fair.

Christmas Fair Chairman
Its never to early to start planning next years Christmas Fair. This is our biggest fund raiser during the year, and we need a chairman for this annual event. If you would like more information about this position, call Rita Sparano. Over the past few years she has put together a long list of sources and tips and will be glad to share them

Several of our Historical Society items are for sale at the Town Clerks office in Town Hall. Images of America, Monroe, Ct., our book of photographs of Monroe is available for $16.99, the series of collectible bottles are $10.00 each, and our newest collectible, the rendering of the Old Schoolhouse by Primrose Path of Stratford, is $15.00

Donations
We have received several donations over the last few months. Marilyn Burr Ober and Marjorie Burr Carmody donated several items from the family of Lawrence M. Burr. Included were several personal and business ledgers, many years of Town of Monroe Annual Reports dating from 1919, an old map of Monroe, and many family pictures. Jean Chason, daughter of Charlotte Harrison, gave us a collection of Monroe Jaycee Phone Directories from 19641993 (except 1967, 1980 and 1981). A small wooden lap writing box was presented to the Society by Helen Tufano. She received the box from Beulah Beck; the box came from the Arthur Tyrrell home on Hattertown Road. Mrs. Tufano also gave us several miscellaneous paper items including tax receipts from 1904, 1890, 1894 and 1895. The Town of Monroe gave us several items pertaining to the 175th Anniversary Celebration including an American flag flown over the U. S. Capitol on September 30, 1997.

Dan Cruzon to Speak
Dan Cruzon, a resident of Newtown and a teacher at Barlow High School, will speak about his archeological digs in Putnam State Park on April 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Meetinghouse on East Village/Barn Hill Roads. Mr. Cruzon led a team of volunteers who uncovered relatively undisturbed areas in Putnam Park where the Continental Army was encamped during the winter of 1778-79.

Hands-on-History
One-day Spring Session We will be holding a one-day session of our Hands-on-History workshop on Saturday, April 15 from 9:30 a.m.12:00 p.m. at the Beardsley House for children in 3rd through 6th grades. The featured activity will be dyeing and decorating Easter Eggs using natural dyes and traditional folk art methods of decoration. The fee is $20.00 per child plus a $5.00 materials fee. Each child will have several completed items to take home. Call Judy Standerford, 268-5511, to register.

Barn Sale Donations
We are always looking for donations that can be sold at a Barn Sale or at our Nanas Attic table. Small collectibles are always popular at the Christmas Fair and larger items are priced to sell at an outdoor sale during events held at the Beardsley Homestead. Call Judy Standerford, 268-5511, to arrange a time to drop them off at the Barn or to have items picked up.

Meetinghouse Update
Several society members have been meeting to work on our collections at the Meetinghouse. This is an ongoing project that will probably take most of the year. At the end of that time we hope to have everything inventoried and stored in acid-free paper or other appropriate storage. The charming little girl at left was scanned from one of a collection of childrens books donated to us by Mrs. Clara Johnson.
